Carol Morgan School (CMS) is seeking an Elementary School Counselor (PreK–Grade 2). This position supports the social-emotional, behavioral, and early developmental needs of young learners in alignment with the school’s mission and values. Grounded in internationally recognized counseling ethics, competencies, and best practices—including those outlined by the International School Counseling Association (ISCA)—the counselor designs and implements a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate program focused on prevention, early intervention, and the foundational skills that support student well-being and growth. Working closely with classroom teachers, administrators, families, and support staff, the Early Childhood Counselor plays a key role in fostering a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment. This includes supporting the development of emotional regulation, social skills, independence, and a strong sense of belonging, while partnering with families to support students’ growth both in and out of the classroom. Program Purpose & Focus The Elementary School Counselor’s work is centered on supporting students across the five core social-emotional learning domains: Self-awareness Self-management Social awareness Relationship skills Responsible decision-making These domains are addressed primarily through universal instruction, proactive consultation, targeted support, and family partnership, rather than reactive discipline. Key Responsibilities 1.Comprehensive Counseling Program Design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive elementary counseling program aligned with CMS’s social-emotional framework and international school counseling standards. Establish annual program goals based on student needs, schoolwide data, and strategic priorities. Use counseling-related data (e.g., SEL screeners, attendance trends, behavioral patterns) to inform programming and decision-making. 2.Direct Student Support Deliver universal SEL instruction through classroom lessons, assemblies, and schoolwide initiatives. Provide short-term individual and small-group counseling focused on emotional regulation, coping skills, peer relationships, and problem-solving. Support students during key transitions, including entry to CMS, departures, and the transition from elementary to middle school. Contribute professional insight to class placement considerations when appropriate. 3.Proactive Behavioral & Mental Health Support Partner with teachers and administrators to proactively support students exhibiting concerning behaviors through consultation, observation, and early intervention. Help teams thoughtfully determine whether unsafe or concerning student actions or language may be related to developmental behavior, social-emotional skill gaps, or underlying mental health needs. Support the development of preventative strategies and classroom supports that promote regulation, safety, and belonging. Participate in MTSS processes by providing counseling insight, data interpretation, and recommendations. Coordinate referrals to outside mental health professionals when appropriate and support students’ re-entry following external interventions. Serve as a collaborative support—not a disciplinarian—in behavior-related decision-making. 4.Collaboration & Consultation Collaborate closely with classroom teachers to embed social-emotional learning and well-being practices into daily instruction. Attend grade-level meetings to support proactive planning around student needs. Work in partnership with the OLC team, learning support staff, and administration to align student support systems. 5.Family & Community Partnership Partner with families around child development, emotional regulation, and student well-being. Provide families with resources, strategies, and communication related to social-emotional growth. Facilitate parent workshops or presentations aligned with school priorities. Support families navigating cultural transitions and adjustment in an international school context. 6.Professional Learning & Staff Support Provide professional learning opportunities for staff related to SEL, student well-being, and preventative support. Support new staff with orientation to CMS’s SEL philosophy and student support systems. Collaborate with the schoolwide counseling team to align practices and protocols. 7.Admissions & Schoolwide Contributions Review elementary admissions screening and application materials with attention to social-emotional readiness and support considerations. Participate in schoolwide or divisional committees as assigned. Maintain ethical standards, confidentiality, and professional conduct consistent with international counseling practices. Perform other duties as assigned by the Elementary School Principal. What We’re Looking For Required Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling Psychology, or a closely related field. Certification or licensure as a school counselor (or eligibility to obtain). Strong understanding of child development and social-emotional learning in elementary-aged students. Experience providing individual, group, and classroom-based counseling. Excellent communication, collaboration, and consultation skills. Commitment to inclusion, equity, and culturally responsive practice. Preferred Experience in an international or independent school setting. Familiarity with MTSS frameworks and multidisciplinary team processes. Experience using SEL screening tools and data-informed decision-making. Training in trauma-informed or restorative approaches. Multilingual ability or experience working with multilingual learners and families. Availability to join in August 2026. Schedule: Monday through Friday from 7:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. One day a week until 4 p.m. variable by school year.
